The Medical Programme

The Penang Medical College’s educational programme is designed to produce doctors who are equipped with the necessary knowledge and competence and who are ethical, humane and caring in their professional approach.

The curriculum model is essentially a two cycle system, with the time spent in Dublin at University College Dublin (UCD) or the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) in predominantly Pre-Clinical medical sciences, when they gain a comprehensive understanding of the biomedical sciences necessary to enter Clinical training. Upon successful completion of their Pre-Clinical studies, students continue with their Clinical training in PMC, Penang, Malaysia, while still revisiting the medical sciences when appropriate.

Clinical Training is undertaken at the PMC Campus as well as at the Penang General Hospital, Seberang Jaya Hospital, Bukit Mertajam Hospital, Taiping Hospital and approved clinical centres in Malaysia. During their period of clinical training in Penang, the students remain registered as full-time students of either RCSI or UCD.

The Clinical School comprises the departments of

  • Medicine
  • Surgery
  • Obstetrics & Gynaecology
  • Psychiatry
  • Paediatrics
  • General Practice
  • Public Health and Epidemiology

The undergraduate medical programme utilises a curricular model in which student learning is progressive, becoming more complex with ensuing years, but with attempts to integrate both horizontally and vertically. There is a spiral to encourage implementation of pre-clinical sciences as well as a thread going through all the phases of learning made up of the instilling of ethics, professional proficiency, patient safety and evidence-based medicine
