Message From The President

You are to be congratulated, if you have decided to choose medicine as a career. Your choice will provide you with enormous fulfillment and satisfaction throughout your professional life.

There is of course a price to be paid. You will work long and unsociable hours. You will have to study continuously to keep pace with new developments. However the rewards in terms of professional and personal achievements will be very great indeed.

Choosing your medical school is as important as choosing your career. Entry standards must be high, so that you will have no difficulty in coping with the rigorous medical undergraduate curriculum. Staff student ratio should be such that an appropriate level of personal tuition is available to each student. Laboratory resources should be first class and clinical facilities should enable students to obtain experience in a wide spectrum of disease processes.

As most of you will be aware, the undergraduate curriculum at Penang Medical College was established as a twinning programme providing pre-clinical courses in Dublin at The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and at University College Dublin and providing clinical courses in Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics and Psychiatry in Penang. This arrangement has a number of advantages.

Students have access to up-to-date modern laboratories in Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Pathology in institutions with a long established reputation in medical education. When they return to Penang for their clinical studies, they will be exposed to the pattern of disease and the clinical environment in which they will practise after graduation. In addition, while they can enjoy the mind broadening experience of working abroad as members of an international student body, their clinical years in Penang will give them a sound understanding of the health care delivery systems of Malaysia. A further advantage is of course that studying abroad for two and a half years is only half as expensive as studying abroad for five years.

The degrees offered by Penang Medical College are the primary medical degrees of The National University of Ireland (MB BCh BAO). These degrees are exactly the same as those conferred on graduates of The National University of Ireland and The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and are recognised all over the world for the purpose of post-graduate training and practise.

To those who have already achieved a place in Penang Medical College "Welcome and well done" and to those who are seeking a place "We look forward to having you with us".
