Irish Education, Global Experience – A Heritage of Penang

It was in education that the strongest historical links existed. The French de la Salle brothers, dedicated to the education of the common people, had many schools in Ireland.

The French Brothers arrived in Penang in 1852 to take charge of an existing school, St Xavier’s. The oldest girls school in Malaysia is Penang is Convent Light Street. There is no more Irish name than Fitzgerald. Sister Aidan Fitzgerald came to Light St. in 1954 and, uncharacteristically, taught Science to the girls for many years before she was transferred to Convent Green Lane.

There were many historically educational links between Ireland and Penang that mark the growth of quality education.

Penang Medical College (PMC) is a private medical school wholly-owned by two world-renowned Irish medical universities, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and University College Dublin (UCD). PMC is proud of their international reputation and PMC doctors are highly sought-after in Malaysia and globally.

All students start the programme with pre-clinical years in Dublin and Ireland for 25 years at either the RCSI or UCD. They then continue with rigorous and exceptional clinical training with PMC in Penang as students of the RCSI and UCD.

Medical Students share their highlights

“My experience thus far has been surreal. I have learnt far more than I bargained for,” said Chan Weng Kit, first-year medical student at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI).

“Besides being renowned for excellence in medical training, RCSI has a closely-knit community, which makes it a special and conducive place to study medicine,” said Melissa Mae Gabriel.

“It is an opportunity to study interesting and informative content taught by world-class professors alongside classmates from all over the world. Dublin is a wonderful city to be a student in and given its proximity to continental Europe, there are plenty of travel opportunities,” said a first-year student from Nepal, Neema Norbu Sherpa at University College Dublin (UCD).
