About Penang
![]() Penang, “The Pearl of the Orient” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penang) lies off the north-western coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The State comprises the island of Penang covering an area of about 293 sq. km. and an area of approximately 753 sq. km. on the mainland known as Seberang Perai (Province Wellesley). They are linked by the Penang Bridge, the longest bridge in South East Asia.Penang was established as the first British trading port in the Far East in 1786. Today it is a bustling metropolitan community which combines the best of the East and West. This is reflected in its heritage buildings as well as in the lifestyles, food and customs of the people. The capital, Georgetown, is a centre for commerce, education and culture. Penang has an International Airport with worldwide destinations. With a population of approximately 1.5 million (704,000 on Penang Island), Penang retains its charming appeal and distinctive character. Its multi-racial population contributes to a wealth of social and cultural attractions. Much of its charm also lies in its famous golden beaches and calm warm seas. As well as being home to Penang Medical College, the State is also the location of one of the oldest universities in Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia. |
